No. 24 Hoosiers Get Clipped by Illinois, 6-1

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- It was tough sledding for the No. 24 Indiana women’s tennis team at Illinois on Sunday as the Hoosiers fell to the Illini, 6-1.
Illinois won the No. 2 doubles match to start before Indiana’s Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith evened things up with an 8-4 win in the No. 3 match over Jerricka Boone and Julia Jamieson.
With the No. 1 match still on the court, the doubles point would come down to the winner between Indiana’s Carolyn Chupa and Alecia Kauss vs. Melissa Kopinski and Louise Kwong of Illinois. IU led 7-6 before Illinois took the next game to even the tally at 7-7. Kopinski and Kwong went on to outlast Chupa and Kauss in the tiebreak, 7-3, to take the match and the doubles point for Illinois.
The Illini then added two more points with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles before Indiana’s Paula Gutierrez put the Hoosiers on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Jade Hilton in the No. 4 match.
Illinois then clinched the team win as Boone downed IU’s Chupa in the No. 6 position, 7-5, 6-4. The Illini went on take victories at No. 3 and No. 1 as well.
“It's a frustrating loss because we put ourselves in position to win the doubles and when we didn't the momentum really went to Illinois,” head coach Lin Loring said. “We also had our chances in singles, Illinois just played the big points better than we did today.”
Indiana will return home for its next match against Northwestern on Saturday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m. ET inside the IU Tennis Center.
