Hoosiers Take Down Murray State, Oregon

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 49 Indiana men’s tennis team picked up two wins on Friday, including a back and fourth win against No. 44 Oregon.
The Hoosiers (6-1) beat Murray State 7-0 and prevailed over Oregon in a thrilling 4-2 match decided on a third set tiebreaker.
“We were playing for each other and for IU,” head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. “I thought we did a great job of being one out there.”
In the opening match against Murray State, the Hoosiers got off to a quick start as Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk provided a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Chris Essick and Stefan Lugonjic followed with a 6-1 victory to give the Hoosiers the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
In singles play all six Hoosiers in the lineup won in straight sets, led by an opening 6-0, 6-2 victory from Matthew McCoy at the four spot. Sam Monette took a break and his doubles partner Daniel Bednarczyk played at the No. 1 spot and didn’t miss a beat with a 6-0, 6-1 win to put the Hoosiers up 3-0. Freshman Raheel Manji clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Also earning wins in the match against Murray State, Elliott Yee (6-4, 6-0), Stefan Lugonjic (6-2, 6-3) and Chris Essick (7-5, 6-2).
Again Oregon, the Hoosiers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point with a 6-4 from at No. 1 doubles and a 6-2 win from Stefan Lugonjic and Chris Essick at No. 2 doubles.
The Hoosiers took five out of six first sets in singles, including three on tiebreakers. Freshman Raheel Manji won 6-1, 7-6 and junior Sam Monette followed with a 7-6, 6-4 win to put IU up 3-0 in the match.
Oregon (6-2) would not go down without a fight and took matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to bring the overall match score to 3-2.
The attention turned to two courts, where junior Daniel Bednarczyk was in a third set tiebreaker with the match 1-1 and freshman Matthew McCoy was in a second set tiebreaker after dropping the opening set.
Bednarczyk got out to an early 4-2 lead but Oregon came back to cut the lead to one at 6-5. On match point Bednarczyk put down a powerful serve that was returned out of bounds to give the Hoosiers the match victory.
Up next Indiana travels to Illinois on Feb. 22 for a match at 4:00 p.m. ET.
