PRINCETON, N.J. - Indiana starts off day two of the Princeton Invitational with an upset over the host and ninth ranked Princeton Tigers. Led by four goals from Rebecca Gerrity in the fourth quarter and overtime, the Hoosiers won 9-8 in a come from behind victory.
In addition to Gerrity's four goals, other Hoosiers to score were senior Summer Creighton (2), junior Candyce Schroeder, senior Shelby Taylor and freshman Sarah Myers.
Much like last year's CPWA Championship game (also against Princeton), the Hoosiers needed some late game heroics to come up with the win. Princton scored the first goal of the game at the 4:55 mark in the first quarter. Senior Summer Creighton evened the score at one just a minute and a half later. Before the first half ended, Princeton scored two more goals to lead 3-1 at the intermission.
To start the second half, Creighton netted her second goal of the game to bring Indiana within one goal. Princeton scored two goals in about one and half minutes to extend their lead to 5-2 -- the biggest of the game. Indiana came back with three goals of their own to tie the score at five apiece.
Including Gerrity's goal which tied the game at 5-5, Princeton and the senior utility traded goals. With under a minute to go in regulation, the Tigers led 7-6. In the final possession of the game for the Hoosiers, freshman Sarah Myers scored on a counter attack to tie the game at 7-7 to put the game in overtime.
Princeton got a goal in the early seconds of overtime, followed quickly by Gerrity's third goal. Gerrity would score her fourth goal of the game to give Indiana their first lead of the game with just under two minutes left in overtime number two. A strong defensive effort in the final two minutes would hold the score at 9-8 and complete the upset of No. 9 Princeton.
Indiana will play the Villanova Wildcats at 2:30 pm (ET) for the final game of the Princeton Invitational.
