BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 42 Indiana women's tennis team fell at home to No. 28 Northwestern on Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
The doubles point came down to the wire. Indiana’s Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy cruised to an 8-4 win over Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung in the No. 3 match, 8-4, to start things.
The remaining two matches would be decided by a tiebreak. At No. 1, NU’s Erin Larner and Brooke Rischbieth were matched up against Indiana’s Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek. The Northwestern duo outlasted IU’s tandem in the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the win.
With No. 2 still on the courts, it too went to a tiebreak. Indiana’s Kim Schmider and Alecia Kauss edged Alicia Barnett and Rheeya Doshi, 8-7 (5). The win gave Indiana the doubles point.
In singles, Paula Gutierrez gave Indiana its second point of the afternoon with a dominant straight-set win over NU’s Chatt, 6-3, 6-0. Northwestern then got on the board as Rischbieth downed IU’s Smith in the No. 6 match, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wildcats (5-3) would even the match at 2-2 as Indiana’s Klyczek fell to Barnett in the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-4. Northwestern would then quickly earn the team win with victories at No. 5 and No. 3 singles to clinch the match.
Kauss gave Indiana (9-3) its final point of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Larner at No. 2.
The Hoosiers will next head north to battle Purdue on March 13 at 1 p.m. ET in West Lafayette.
