Indiana Comes Up Short at No. 25 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 45 Indiana women’s tennis team came up short on the road against rival No. 25 Purdue, 6-1.
Purdue (8-2, 3-0) set the tone from the start, taking the doubles point right away with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 3 match went unfinished.
In singles, Indiana (9-4, 0-1) could not seize any momentum from the Boilermakers as Purdue won in straight sets at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the match. The remaining three singles matches would go on to a third set.
At No. 1, IU’s Katie Klyczek won the first set over Purdue’s Daniela Vidal. But Vidal rebounded, giving up only two games in the final two sets to take the win, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
In the No. 3 match, Lynda Xepoleas took the first set over Indiana’s Shannon Murdy. Murdy answered winning the second set before falling just short in the third as Xepoleas won, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Freshman Stephanie Smith got the Hoosiers on the board winning her final two sets at No. 6 vs. Andjela Djokovic, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Indiana will be on the road in its next match at Nebraska on Friday, March 20.
