LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 52 Indiana women’s tennis team knocked off No. 64 Nebraska on the road on Friday afternoon, 4-3. Stephanie Smith’s win at No. 6 singles lifted the Hoosiers over the Huskers.
In doubles, Nebraska (11-5, 0-4) won the No. 2 match to start before Stephanie Smith and Carolyn Chupa evened things for Indiana (10-4, 1-1) with a victory at No. 3. The Huskers then took the doubles point with a win at No. 1.
In singles, Nebraska jumped ahead 3-0 with victories at No. 1 and No. 5. Shannon Murdy reversed momentum to IU’s favor with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 over NU’s Mary Hanna. Paula Gutierrez (No. 4) and Alecia Kauss (No. 2) then evened the match with straight set wins.
The final match remaining was on the No. 6 court as Indiana’s Smith was battling Nebraska’s Mackenna Maddox. Maddox took the first set, 6-1. Smith battled back in the second set to outlast Maddox, 7-5. In the final and deciding set, Smith clinched the win and the match for the Hoosiers by a 6-4 margin.
The Hoosiers will next head to Iowa on Sunday to take on Hawkeyes at 11:30 a.m. ET.
