BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team dropped a close battle with No. 13 Kentucky on Wednesday evening, 4-1. After allowing three first-inning runs, the Hoosiers allowed just one more Wildcat run in the game.
Indiana (9-20) plated its lone run of the contest in the first inning after back-to-back one-out singles by Brianna Meyer and Erin Lehman put two on for Kelsey Dotson, who brought in Meyer on a single to right field.
However, the Wildcats (21-5) would quickly answer as Christian Stokes led off the Kentucky inning with a double to left center field. Following a walk to Breanne Ray, Nikki Sagermann brought in Stokes on a single to left. Next batter up, Griffin Joiner plated two runners on a double to make it 3-1 in favor of the Wildcats.
Kentucky added a run in the third inning off a sacrifice fly by Ray.
The Hoosiers threatened plenty of times, recording seven hits off Erin Rethlake, matching the number of Wildcat knocks.
Pitcher Lora Olson settled in after the first inning to toss a complete game, giving up just three earned runs and striking out two batters.
Up next, Indiana opens up Big Ten play this weekend at Andy Mohr Field as the Hoosiers play host to Rutgers (10-7). The first game of the three-day set will be Friday at 6 p.m.
