Indiana Tops Iowa for Second Straight Win

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 52 Indiana women's tennis team won four singles matches to top Iowa on the road on Sunday, 4-2. The win gave IU its second-straight road conference victory.
Iowa (7-6, 1-3) took an early lead by winning the doubles point with convincing wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lead 1-0.
Just as they did at Nebraska on Friday, the Hoosiers would have to win four times in singles play after dropping the doubles point. Shannon Murdy started the scoring for Indiana (11-4, 2-1) as she downed Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen in straight sets at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1.
The Hawkeyes took the lead back as Shelby Talcott defeated IU's Katie Klyczek, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 1 match. Alecia Kauss then evened the tally in the No. 2 match as she dominated Iowa's Morven McCulloch by giving up just three games, 6-1, 6-2.
Carolyn Chupa, playing at No. 6 for Indiana, gave IU its third point of the day as she snuck past Iowa's Ellen Silver in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Indiana's Paula Gutierrez blanked Annette Dohanics in the first set before Dohanics rebounded to take a tiebreaker in the second set. But Gutierrez had the final say as she downed Dohanics in the third and final set, 6-2, to earn the win at No. 4 singles and the team victory for the Hoosiers.
"These were two big road wins for us," head coach Lin Loring said. "We are opening Big Ten play with five consecutive away matches, so we knew we didn't want to start 0-5. Both wins came the hard way. We lost the doubles and came back and took four singles matches. I'm very proud of the way the team battled back. It's tough to take four singles matches on the road"
The Hoosiers will play on the road again next weekend with a pair of conference matches beginning at Penn State on Friday, March 27 before heading to Ohio State on Sunday, March 29.
