TEMPE, Ariz. - The Indiana women’s water polo team rallied from their previous 9-8 overtime loss to beat Hartwick College 9-6. Leading the way on offense for the Hoosiers was Shelby Taylor and Kelly Matthews, as they both netted a hat trick in Indiana’s seventh consecutive win over the Hawks.
Two other Hoosiers were able to get on the scoreboard this afternoon. Candyce Schroeder struck two goals into the cage, followed by Summer Creighton with one goal. Colleen McNaught served two assists in the game, bringing her total to four on the weekend. Rebecca Gerrity and Sarah Myers were also credited with one assist each.
MacKenzie Bonk was in the cage for the Hoosiers in this game, and she was a key factor to Indiana’s success on defense. Bonk recorded eight saves, many of which killed power plays and prevented Hartwick from keeping up with the Hoosiers’ offense. She also came out of the cage for two courageous saves in the second half.
The Hawks initiated scoring with a two-meter strike early in the first quarter, but the Hoosiers answered with a goal by Schroeder from two meters. The Hoosiers found another goal by Taylor on the counter attack, and held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
Creighton increased Indiana’s lead to 3-1 to start the second quarter, but Hartwick countered with two unanswered goals to bring the lead within a goal. Indiana finished the half with two goals from Matthews and Taylor to extend their lead to 6-3 at half time.
Schroeder netted her second goal from two meters out near the start of the third quarter. Hartwick responded with a goal lobbed from the perimeter with just under four minutes in the third quarter. Two consecutive goals by Matthews brought Indiana’s lead to 9-4 with a quarter remaining.
Hartwick chipped into Indiana’s lead with two back-to-back goals. But the Hoosiers played tight defense and kept their three-goal lead, winning the game 9-6.
The Hoosiers (12-9, 1-0 CWPA) will continue the ASU Invite on Sunday, March 22. Indiana will take on the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils at 12:20 pm ET and the University of Redlands Bulldogs at 3:20 pm ET. Follow the action on Twitter @IUWaterPolo.
