BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In a game shortened in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs due to Rutgers' travel schedule, the Indiana softball team's comeback fell short in the series finale, 10-6.
Rutgers got on the board first with a run scored on a Hoosier fielding error in the top of the opening inning.
Indiana (10-22, 1-2 Big Ten) took the lead in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI groundout by Kelsey Dotson and a sacrifice fly from Shannon Cawley to score Brianna Meyer.
However, Rutgers scored seven unanswered runs, capped by a four-run fourth inning, to make it 8-2. The Scarlet Knights' big fourth frame consisted of a solo homer by Bridget Carr and another run on an Indiana error before Rebecca Hall hit a two-RBI double.
Indiana's comeback started in the fifth, as the Hoosiers plated four runs in the inning on a grand slam by Katelyn Conenna, her first homer of her career. Meyer, Lehman and CaraMia Tsirigos all earned walks to set the stage for Conenna's blast.
The Scarlet Knights got two runs back on a two-run homer in the top of the sixth by Melanie Slowinski.
After Meyer reached with one out in the bottom of the frame, a two-out walk to Kelsey Dotson put two runs on. However, the game was called due to a previous agreement that play would end at 2:30 p.m. to accommodate the Scarlet Knights' travel plans.
Up next, the Hoosiers travel to Louisville, Ky. on Wednesday to face the Cardinals at 6 p.m.
