Indiana Cruises to Win over Maryland, 6-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An exciting doubles finish in Indiana’s favor provided enough momentum for the Hoosiers to take down Maryland on Saturday at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts, 6-1.
Indiana (13-7, 4-4) won the doubles point in exciting fashion. The Hoosiers won at No. 3 doubles before Maryland (9-12, 2-8) took the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 match, IU’s Katie Klyczek and Kim Schmider found their selves trailing 6-3 to Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina and Kristina Hovsepyan. The Hoosier duo fought back to tie the pro set at 6-6 and then again at 7-7 to force a tiebreak.
During the tiebreaker, Klyczek and Schmider faced match point against Maryland on a number of occasions before eventually taking the tiebreak, 12-10, and in doing so clinching the doubles point for Indiana.
IU rode that momentum into singles play as Carolyn Chupa cruised in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over UM’s Hovsepyan at No. 6. Indiana’s Stephanie Smith followed Chupa’s lead as she gave up only one game in her 6-1, 6-0 win over Oliva Gaudreault in the No. 5 position.
Klyczek then clinched the team win for Indiana as she won in straight sets in the No. 1 match over Ekaterina Tour, 6-2, 6-3. Alecia Kauss (No. 2) and Paula Gutierrez (No. 4) also picked up singles victories for Indiana.
The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Sunday, April 12 to battle Rutgers in Bloomington at 10 a.m. ET.
