ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Indiana women's rowing team, ranked No. 15 in the most recent CRCA Top 25 poll, picked up dual wins over No. 7 Michigan and Michigan State in good conditions in Ann Arbor on Saturday. The win over the Wolverines is the first in program history.
"I was very pleased with our effort today," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "With this being the first time that we have had official 2,000 meter races, you never know how people will respond. But all of the work we have put in prepared us very well for this. I thought we raced as well as we could have, given the amount of time we have been able to have on the water."
In the morning session against Michigan, the Hoosiers picked up wins in four of the six races, including both the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 for the first time in program history. The Varsity 8 posted a time of 6:28.90 to edge the Wolverines by 3.3 seconds. The Second Varsity 8 had a time of 6:40.6, which was 3.76 faster than UM.
Michigan took the Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 4 races after the Hoosiers opened the morning by winning the Novice 8 and Second Novice 8 pieces.
"The wins today, particularly the win over No. 7 Michigan, will give our team a lot of confidence going into the next couple weeks," said Peterson. "With this being the first time our first or second varsity eight have defeated Michigan, that will do nothing but help us down the road."
The afternoon session against Michigan State again saw IU pull out wins in four of the six races, including both Varsity 8 boats. The Varsity 8 came away with the win by nearly 20 seconds while the Second Varsity 8 crossed the line nearly five seconds ahead of MSU.
In the Varsity 4 race, it would be Indiana winning by 11.1 seconds with a time of 7:37.8. The Second Varsity 4 race saw the Hoosiers finish third behind Iowa and Michigan with Michigan State not entering a boat.
The Spartans would win the Novice 8 competition but the Hoosiers claimed the win in the Second Novice 8 race, registering a time of 7:11.1 compared to MSU's time of 7:16.2.
Next weekend, Indiana will travel to Clemson, South Carolina, to take part in the Clemson Invitational.
