BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 41 Indiana men's tennis team came into the week with the goal to finish strong in their last three Big Ten regular season matches. They accomplished step one of that goal on with a 4-0 victory over Purdue on Wednesday at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts.
Purdue came out with a strong start, grabbing 2-0 leads in two of the three doubles matches. After a Boilermaker 8-2 win at the No. 2 doubles position and an 8-4 IU win at the three spot, all eyes turned to a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, to determine the doubles points.
The tiebreak was never in jeopardy for Indiana, as juniors Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk jumped out to a 4-1 lead and took the match with a 7-2 win in the tiebreak.
"The Indiana-Purdue rivalry is strong and has a long standing tradition," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We came out knowing it was going to be a tough match and we did well all throughout doubles and singles to get the win."
Junior Elliott Yee, playing in his fourth Big Ten singles match of the season, provided an early spark for the Hoosiers (16-9, 5-4) with a 6-1, 6-0 win to put IU up 2-0 in the match.
Bednarczyk and freshman Raheel Manji followed with straight set victories to give the Hoosiers the 4-0 victory, in just under two and a half hours of total match time.
With the win the Hoosiers equal their win total from last season and already have two more Big Ten wins then a season ago. Indiana currently sits in fifth-place in the conference with two more matches to play.
"We are trying to get a little better every week," Wurtzman said. "If we can keep getting better, I feel like the end of our season can be very strong."
"The season is coming to an end and there is still a lot we want to accomplish," IU assistant coach Mike Murray added. "We had great energy and focus in our match today and they really executed what we have been telling them as coaches."
Up next the Hoosiers will host Michigan on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and close out the conference regular season slate with Michigan State at home on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
