ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana softball team dropped the series opener to No. 4 Michigan in five innings on Friday evening, 11-2.
Senior Shannon Cawley, sophomore Erin Lehman and freshmen Rebecca Blitz and Taylor Uden each recorded a hit for the Hoosiers (14-29, 5-8 B1G).
After neither team made it on base in the first inning, Indiana junior Kelsey Dotson led off the second frame with a walk. Junior Michelle Huber earned a walk before Dotson was called out for interference on a grounder by sophomore CaraMia Tsirigos. One batter later, a ground ball hit by Uden was bobbled by Michigan's second baseman to allow Huber to plate the first run of the game.
The Wolverines (39-6, 12-2 B1G) responded in a big way, scoring 10 runs on six hits and an Indiana error in the bottom of the frame. After the bases were loaded with no outs, Kelsey Susalla scored on an Indiana fielding error. Back-to-back RBI singles and a fielder's choice brought in three more runs before Sierra Romero knocked a three-run homer to make it 7-1. The big Michigan inning was completed with RBI singles from Tera Blanco and Aidan Falk, who both reached twice in the frame.
Blitz led off the third inning with a walk and was sent to second on a knock to center field by Lehman. A single to left by Cawley loaded the bases for Dotson, who earned her second walk of the game to bring in Blitz. However, Indiana was unable to capitalize further on the loaded bags as three straight Hoosiers went down on strikes. Michigan pitcher Megan Betsa tossed 12 strikeouts in her five innings of work.
Michigan looked to increase their lead in the bottom of the inning, putting three runners on with no outs. However, Indiana pitcher Miranda Tamayo and the Indiana infield retired the Wolverines to end the threat.
The Wolverines did add a run in the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Sierra Lawrence to score Mary Sbonek.
Indiana and Michigan will wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The two teams were originally slated to play a single game Saturday and Sunday, but impending inclement weather on Sunday forced a change in schedule.
