CLEMSON, S.C. - On the final day of the 2015 Clemson Invitational, the No. 12 Indiana picked up a pair of wins as well as two top three finishes to wrapup a successful weekend of racing some of the top crews in the country.
Indiana First Varsity 8 crew picked up its second heat win of the weekend, defeating second place Texas by just less than three seconds and Syracuse by 10 seconds. Their time of 6:25.7 was their best of the weekend by just over three seconds.
The Second Varsity 8 also logged a win in their heat, topping Texas by 4.5 seconds and Syracuse by eight seconds. Just like the 1V8, the 2V8’s time of 6:35.1 was its best of the three races this weekend.
“We are happy to see both of the Varsity 8 boats come out and get wins today,” Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. “The biggest result that are excited about is the 2V8 and how they came back from a tough day yesterday to knock off Texas. They really stepped up today.”
The First Varsity 4 crew posted a time of 7:29.9 to finish third in their heat, trailing the winning boat from Texas by eight seconds and Syracuse by three seconds. For the Second Varsity 4 boat, the Hoosiers came in fifth with a time of 7:45.5.
The final crew that was on the water for IU was the Novice 8, as they raced against other novice or Third Varsity 8 crews from other schools. In their heat on Sunday, the Hoosiers time of 6:59.7 was good for second place in their heat.
“It was a good weekend overall,” Peterson said. “We wanted to come down here and get three really good races in against some very good crews. We were able to come off the water after each race and make adjustments going into the next race, so being able to do that will be extremely beneficial for us as we continue this season.”
Next weekend, Indiana will host Texas, Notre Dame and Columbia at Lake Lemon in Bloomington for the Dale England Cup.
