BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana water polo team cruised to their fifth consecutive conference win with an 18-10 victory over the Bucknell Bison on Saturday evening. The IU seniors played passionately for a full crowd on their Senior Night, combining for a total of six goals and nine assists.
Candyce Schroeder and Kelly Matthews led 11 Hoosiers in scoring with three goals apiece. Other Hoosiers with multiple goals were Rebecca Gerrity, Colleen McNaught, and Sarah Young with two each. Indiana had six other players add one goal in the game, using a balanced attack to keep the Bison at bay.
McNaught hit a milestone on Saturday night with her 200th career assist, the first of her five assists in the match. Schroeder added three assists to her hat trick, followed by Summer Creighton with two. Matthews, Gerrity, Young, and Shelby Taylor were credited with one assist each.
Indiana opened the match with three goals in the first two minutes, all of which involved Schroeder. The junior scored an unassisted goal in the first 20 seconds, and then followed that with two assists to Creighton and McNaught, respectively. Bucknell’s Taylor Barnett grabbed her first goal with three minutes remaining in the quarter, her first of six in the match. Indiana jumped on the attack with a goal from Gerrity and two from Matthews for a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Indiana increased their lead to six goals early in the second period when Young found Ellie Stott from two meters. Down but not out, the Bison began their charge midway through the quarter, a 4-0 scoring run in 90 seconds of play. Indiana regrouped and slowed their pace on the attack, which led to a few smart plays and three goals from McNaught, Schroeder, and Matthews in the final two minutes of the half.
The third quarter was all Indiana. The Hoosiers opened the period by killing a Bucknell power play and a goal by Sarah Myers the other way. The Bison drew an ejection once again, but another save by Campbell killed Bucknell’s second power play of the quarter. Taylor found Schroeder on the ensuing counter attack, which opened up a four-goal swing by the Hoosiers. The Bison had an attempt on goal at the close of the period, but Campbell converted another save as time expired. The Hoosiers posted an unscathed 5-0 third quarter to seal their lead heading into the fourth.
The Bison chipped into Indiana’s lead with five goals in the final period, but Indiana’s lead was too large to overcome. Bucknell opened scoring a minute into fourth. Indiana answered with goals from Young and Jennifer Beadle, split by a daring save from MacKenzie Bonk. Bucknell notched four unanswered goals to cut Indiana’s lead to single digits, but a four-save quarter from Bonk kept Bucknell from getting any closer. IU freshman Anna Brummett capped the victory with a screamer of a goal in the final minute, as her unassisted shot powered through a save attempt by the Bison keeper.
The Hoosiers bring the regular season to a close with three games on Sunday, April 19. Indiana will open with a match against Mercyhurst University at 9:00 am, followed by a non-conference clash against Gannon University at 2:00 pm. The Hoosiers will close the regular season with their match against Notre Dame College at 3:30 pm.
