BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women’s water polo team moved to 3-0 on the weekend with an 18-3 win over Gannon University. The Hoosiers opened the game with 11 goals in the first quarter before cruising to their 10th win in their last 12 games.
The No. 12 Hoosiers displayed a balanced attack in Sunday’s match. Kelly Matthews led Indiana in scoring with a hat trick, followed by Summer Creighton with two goals. Ten other Hoosiers grabbed one goal each in the scoring frenzy. Colleen McNaught and Ellie Stott led five Hoosiers in assists with three each.
Creighton’s goal in the second quarter was her 102nd career goal. She joins McNaught, Taylor, Gerrity, and Schroeder as the fifth IU senior to score 100 goals in her career.
The Hoosiers had a great defensive performance as well. Stott led four Hoosiers with two steals to her name. Mary Campbell and MacKenzie Bonk combined for seven saves in the cage. The defense forced four field blocks at two meters in the game, and shut out the Lady Knights in the second and third quarters.
Indiana’s win over Gannon was head coach Barry King’s 400th career win, as well as his 400th win as IU’s head coach.
Indiana followed this game with a 14-1 win over Notre Dame College to close the season with a 21-11 record, a 9-1 record in their conference. The Hoosiers will take part in the CWPA Championship in Princeton, N.J. from April 24-26.
