PRINCETON, N.J. -The Hoosiers advanced to the CWPA Semifinals on Thursday afternoon after winning 11-4 over the Brown Bears. Indiana and Brown were tied midway through the second quarter at 2-2, but the Hoosiers finished the game on a 9-2 scoring run.
Alexis Jones led the Hoosiers in scoring Friday afternoon with four goals, a single-game season high for Jones. Shelby Taylor followed as the only other multiple goal-scorer for the Hoosiers with two. Five additional Hoosiers--Summer Creighton, Jennifer Beadle, Kelly Matthews Candyce Schroeder, and Colleen McNaught--recorded goals for Indiana.
McNaught led Indiana in assists in their opening tournament game with four dishes, followed by Rebecca Gerrity with three. Matthews, Schroeder, and Sarah Young served one assist apiece.
Mary Campbell had a commanding performance in the cage. Her 12 saves led a shrewd Indiana defense that allowed only one goal per quarter. The defensive outfield combined for eight steals and three field blocks in the game.
Brown leapt to an early lead on a power play opportunity midway through the first quarter. Indiana responded 20 seconds later with an equalizing power play goal from Taylor via McNaught. Matthews found Schroeder in the closing minutes of the quarter for a narrow 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
The Bears opened scoring yet again in the second, a power play equalizer with six minutes remaining in the half. Following Brown's tying goal, the Hoosiers decided to lock down on defense and play smart, patient offense. Indiana forced three consecutive turnovers before back-to-back goals from Jones by way of McNaught. Strong defense to close the half kept the Hoosiers up 4-2 at the break.
Jones grabbed her third goal of the game from Gerrity on a counter attack to start off scoring in the second half. Brown answered with a goal out of a time out to make it 5-3, refusing to let the Hoosiers pull away. But IU closed the quarter with three unanswered goals, including Jones' fourth, for an 8-3 lead with one quarter to play.
The Hoosiers sealed their victory in the fourth with a 3-1 scoring advantage in the final eight minutes.
This win was Indiana's second over Brown this season.
With the Hoosiers' quarterfinals win, they advance to the CWPA semifinals on Saturday, April 25 at 3:50 pm ET. They will take on the winner of Friday's match between second-seed Michigan and seventh-seed Bucknell.
