BLOOMINGTON, Ind. The Hoosiers secured their seventh conference win with a 17-4 victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers on Sunday morning in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Goaltenders MacKenzie Bonk and Mary Campbell amassed an 11-save tandem effort, and five outfield players shared seven steals in a strong defensive showcase by the Hoosiers.
Kelly Matthews and Candyce Schroeder matched their goal totals from the win against Bucknell, both netting a hat trick to lead all scorers. Anna Brummett, Summer Creighton, and Sarah Myers all had multiple-goal outings against the Lakers with two scores each. Ellie Stott, Shelby Taylor, Jordan Elwood, Alexis Jones, and Colleen McNaught all grabbed one goal in the match.
Rebecca Gerrity led all Hoosiers with two assists in the game. Gerrity is known for her aggressive point play on both sides of the ball, and uses her reputation to draw defenders and kick out to open teammates. This has led to six assists for Gerrity in her last four matches. Ten other Hoosiers--Stott, Creighton, Taylor, Elwood, Matthews, Myers, McNaught, Jennifer Beadle, Devon Peterson, and Emily Lowe--were credited with assists in the match.
The biggest factor in Indiana’s win was their watertight play on defense, led by the goaltending performances of Campbell and Bonk. The outfield players were tenacious both in transition and on the perimeter, forcing seven steals. Matthews and Gerrity led the IU defense with two steals each, followed by McNaught, Beadle, and Lowe with one.
The Hoosiers have two games remaining in the regular season, both of which will take place on Sunday, April 19. First, IU will face off in a non-conference clash against Gannon University at 2:00 pm. The Hoosiers will close the regular season with their match against Notre Dame College at 3:30 pm.
