BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind a pair of three-run homers, including a walk-off blast by freshman Mena Fulton, the Indiana softball team defeated Purdue in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, 6-3.
Indiana took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning before Purdue's Alyssa Koorsen hit a solo homer with one out to tie up the game at 3-3.
Junior Michelle Huber led off the bottom of the frame with a single up the middle, followed by a walk to juniorKelsey Dotson. Bloomington native Fulton then stepped in to pinch hit and hit her third career homer to give Indiana the walk-off win.
The three RBI for Fulton ties a career high set in a 10-7 victory against Austin Peay on March 7.
Fulton was the second Hoosier to go yard on a three-run shot as Dotson hit her team-leading 11th long ball of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning to score senior Shannon Cawley and junior Kassi Farmer.
Senior pitcher Miranda Tamayo had an impressive outing while picking up her fifth victory of the year. Tamayo tossed her second complete game of the season, giving up just two earned runs on nine hits and collecting four strikeouts.
The first game was picked up where it left off when it was rained out on April 8 with Boilermakers on the corners after a lead-off triple by Koorsen and a walk to Mary Gooding. Purdue got on the board first as an RBI single by Ashley Burkhardt scores Koorsen. After an Indiana fielding error loaded the bases with no outs, Purdue looked ready to add more runs, but Tamayo rung up a pair of Boilermakers on strikes and forced a pop-up in foul territory to end the inning.
Purdue added its second run of the game after Burkhardt hit a triple then advanced home on a Hoosier fielding error.
