BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind a nine-run sixth inning, the Indiana softball team picked up a win in game one of Friday's doubleheader against Michigan State, 16-9.
The 16 runs scored is the most for Indiana since an 18-0 win against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on March 13, 2011. In addition, the sixth inning is the highest single-inning output for the Hoosiers this season.
Senior Shannon Cawley went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk while scoring four runs in the win, which ties the single-game program high.
Both teams put up runs right off the bat as the Hoosiers led 4-3 after the first frame. The Spartans scored three runs after RBI base knocks by Sarah Gutknecht, McKenzie Long and Jordan Davis.
Sophomore CaraMia Tsirigos put Indiana on the board after a bases-loaded fielder's choice scored sophomoreErin Lehman, who had reached on a one-out double to center. Back-to-back RBI singles by juniors Michelle Huber and Katelyn Conenna tied the game at 3-3 before freshman Rachel O'Malley singled to left to plate Tsirigos and give Indiana the early lead.
Each team recorded RBI doubles - Michigan State's by Kassidy Kujawa and Indiana's from Tsirigos - to put a run across in the second frame.
The Hoosiers extended their lead in the third inning after an RBI single by Lehman scored Conenna and freshman Rebecca Blitz reached home after a Michigan State error.
However, a four-run fourth inning capped by a two-run homer to center field by Stephanie Sanders gave the Spartans their first advantage of the game at 8-7. Michigan State wasn't finished as a sacrifice fly by Kujawa scored Davis in the fifth frame to make it 9-7.
Michigan's State scoring ended there as senior pitcher Miranda Tamayo came in to the game and threw 3.0 scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and two walks.
As Tamayo shut down the Spartans, the Indiana bats went to work in the sixth, plating nine runs on seven hits. After a pair of walks to Cawley and Tsirigos, as well as a single from junior Kelsey Dotson, Huber hit a long single to left field to bring in Cawley. After Conenna tied the game at 9-9 on a sacrifice fly, freshmanMena Fulton brought in Tsirigos to give Indiana the lead. A bases-loaded walk to senior Brianna Meyer and a Fulton score on a wild pitch increased the lead to 12-9 before RBI singles by Cawley and Dotson added three more runs. Cawley scored the final run of the game as she was brought in on an RBI fielder's choice by Tsirigos.
