EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Indiana outhit Evansville but found itself on the losing end of an 8-4 mid-week contest on the road Tuesday evening, as six of UE's eight runs reached base on a hit by pitch or walk.
The top three Hoosiers in the lineup all went for multi-hit games, led by Casey Rodrigue (3), Craig Dedelow (2) and Brad Hartong (2).
Rodrigue's three hits, including a double, matched a career high, while the senior second baseman also posted two stolen bases, a run scored and a run batted in.
The Destrehan, La., native injected life into the Hoosiers early on, despite an early deficit.
After his lead-off double to open the game, Evansville retired eight consecutive Hoosier batters before Rodrigue stepped back up to the plate in the third frame to rejuvenate Indiana.
Rodrigue singled, stole second and scored on Dedelow's single and an infield error to even the score, 1-1.
Evansville responded with six runs over its next two frames, including four Purple Aces that were hit by pitch or walked, building a 7-1 lead. But Indiana wouldn't go quietly.
LHP Will Coursen-Carr entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Hoosiers. After giving up a single, Coursen-Carr retired nine consecutive batters, including four strikeouts, to push the game into the eighth, giving IU a chance to make up ground.
Indiana received a pair of singles from Dedelow and Hartong to open the sixth inning, but Scott Donley grounded into a double play and Logan Sowers struck out as IU came up empty.
Will Nolden's single and Isaiah Pasteur's double put runners in scoring position with one out in the top of the seventh. After Brian Wilhite's sacrifice fly scored Nolden, Rodrigue singled to bring home Pasteur and cut UE's lead to 7-3.
The Hoosiers continued to cut into the deficit in the eighth, scoring on Donley's sac fly. Pinch runner Laren Eustace came in for Brad Hartong, who singled, and reached third on a wild pitch before scoring IU's final run to make it 7-4.
Evansville added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, disrupting IU's momentum to hold on for an 8-4 win.
