TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana softball team dropped its final non-conference game of the year to Indiana State in six innings on Tuesday, 9-1.
The Sycamores (21-26) were led by a complete game outing from pitcher Taylor Lockwood, who gave up only one Hoosier run on three hits while striking out seven and giving up just one walk.
Junior Kelsey Dotson recorded the lone Indiana score as she smacked her 13th home run of the season on a long ball to left field to lead off the second inning. The homer also extended her hitting streak to four games.
Indiana (17-34) looked as if it was going to add onto the lead as a walk to junior Michelle Huber and a hit by sophomore Kayla Mathewson put two on with one out. However, a strikeout and groundout ended the threat.
The Sycamores jumped out in front in the third inning after an Indiana throwing error plated Mallory Schneid, who led-off the frame with a double. Rylee Holland scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice bunt by Aubre Carpenter. Holland finished the contest at 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
A five-run fifth inning extended Indiana State's lead to 7-1 as three consecutive singles loaded the bases with no outs. A two-RBI single by Megan Stone, who went 3-for-3 in the game, made it 4-1 before a sacrifice bunt scored Carpenter. Alexa Cavin and Mary Turitto hit a pair of RBI base knocks to increase Indiana State's lead.
Sophomore Erin Lehman knocked a double to center to start the sixth inning, extending her hitting streak to six games. However, she was left stranded on second as the Hoosiers went down in order.
After Brown singled and advanced to second on another Indiana throwing error, she was plated on a single by Holland off of Indiana pitcher Lora Olson's glove. The Sycamores secured the win in six innings with an RBI single by Cavin to bring in Holland.
The Hoosiers close out the regular season this weekend as they head to Ohio State for a three-game set beginning on Friday evening.
