COLUMBUS, Ohio - With only four hits collected by the Indiana bats, the Hoosiers dropped game one of the series to Ohio State on Friday, 7-0. The shutout marked just the third time this season Indiana has been blanked in a contest.
Buckeye pitcher Olivia O'Reilly tossed a complete game, giving up just four walks and striking out seven.
Indiana (17-36, 7-12 Big Ten) got off to a good start in the first as freshman Rebecca Blitz reached first base on an error, stole second then advanced to third as the ball got away from an Ohio State fielder. However, she was stranded there as Indiana went down swinging.
Ohio State (27-21, 10-11 Big Ten) put the first run on the board in the bottom of the frame as Erika Leonard hit an RBI single to right field to bring in Maddy McIntyre. A spectacular diving grab by Indiana second baseman Erin Lehman kept Ohio State from adding on she grabbed the ball and tagged the bag with her glove to get the third out.
A pair of two-out singles by freshmen Taylor Uden and Rachel O'Malley put the Hoosiers back in business in the second, but a ground out ended the inning.
Caitlin Conrad added onto the Ohio State lead in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI double to center, bringing in Keelia Nester and Bailee Sturgeon to make it 3-0.
After a scoreless third inning, it again appeared Indiana was going to get on the board as two-out walks to Uden and O'Malley but two on for junior Katelyn Conenna, who singled up the middle. However, Uden was thrown out on the play at home on a perfectly targeted throw by Buckeye center field Conrad.
The Buckeyes put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI doubles by McIntyre and Leonard and a sacrifice fly by Cammi Prantl to push the advantage to 6-0.
Anna Kirk scored the final run of the game on a solo homer to left field to lead off the fifth frame.
Indiana and Ohio State will return to Buckeye Field tomorrow at 2 p.m.
