BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 44 Indiana men's tennis team won the doubles point and six out of six first sets in singles to power their way to a 6-1 win against No. 73 Nebraska on Friday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (13-8) won two doubles matches by wide margins at 8-3 and 8-2 to claim the doubles point and build a 1-0 lead.
"We had a good week of practice leading up to this one and I felt it was an important match to get back on the winning side," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "Nebraska is a good team and for us to come out here and win 6-1 means we really played well."
"Winning the doubles point is big for us," Wurtzman added. "That was a key and then we were able to win all six first sets, which really put the pressure on them."
Coming out in singles IU secured first sets wins in all six singles matches, including junior Daniel Bednarczyk coming back from down 5-2 to take his first set 7-5. Bednarczyk carried that momentum on to give the Hoosiers their second point with a 7-5, 6-3 win.
Sophomore Matthew McCoy (6-4, 6-1) and senior Sven Lalic (6-3, 6-3) quickly followed with victories to put the Hoosiers up 4-0. Freshman Raheel Manji added a point for the Hoosiers with a 6-4, 6-1 win to make it 5-0.
Nebraska (9-8) came back with Dusty Boyer, who dropped a first set to junior Sam Monette, but won the next two to put the Huskers on the board.
Sophomore Stefan Lugonjic won a tiebreak in his second set for a straight set victory to end the match and give the Hoosiers the 6-1 edge.
Up next the Hoosiers host No. 68 Iowa on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
