Hoosiers Earn 4-1 Win Against Iowa

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 44 Indiana men's tennis team completed a perfect weekend with a 4-1 victory against No. 68 Iowa on Sunday at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Hoosiers (14-8, 3-3) dropped the doubles point, but came back to win four consecutive singles matches to claim their 14th win of the season.
"I felt like we came together as a team and throughout the match people were encouraging each other," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "I feel like we are still getting better, which is a great thing as the season goes along to keep improving our play."
In doubles juniors Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk won their match 8-4, but an Iowa 8-3 win brought all eyes to the third court, which went to a tiebreak. Iowa would take the tiebreak 7-4 to win the match and take a 1-0 overall lead.
Many of the singles matches were closely contested with two going to tiebreaks in the first set. Monette won a 10-8 tiebreak to claim his first set and freshman Raheel Manji won a tiebreak to take his first set. Bednarczyk and sophomore Matthew McCoy also won first sets for the Hoosiers.
McCoy put the Hoosiers on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 victory and Manji came through with a 7-6, 6-1 win to put Indiana up 2-1.
After winning his opening set, Bednarczyk dropped a 7-5 second set, but rallied and with the second set 4-4, he scored two straight to win the third set and the match to bring the Hoosiers within a point of the overall match victory.
On court one, Monette found himself in another tiebreak and again he prevailed with a 7-2 tiebreak to win his match in straight sets and give the Hoosiers the 4-1 win.
Up next, the Hoosiers go on their final road trip of the regular season when they travel to No. 11 Ohio State on Friday April 10 at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday April 12, the Hoosiers match up against No. 49 Penn State for a 12:00 p.m. match.
