COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite a pair of home runs by freshman Rachel O'Malley and junior Kelsey Dotson, the Indiana softball team dropped its final regular season game of the year to Ohio State on Sunday, 6-3.
Buckeye Caitlin Conrad started the scoring for Ohio State as she led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to center.
Ohio State added onto the lead in the following inning after a bases-loaded walk to Jayla Saibene plated Anna Kirk. One batter later, Conrad hit a two-RBI single to bring in Keelia Nester and Alex Bayne and push the Buckeye lead to 4-0.
With one away in the third, O'Malley stepped in and hit her third career home run on a shot to center field to put the Hoosiers on the board.
Dotson cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth as she led off the inning by going yard on her 14th homer of the season. With that blast, Dotson now moves past Monica Armendarez into second in program history in single-season home runs. She sits just behind Michelle Venturella, who hit 16 in 1994.
After Ohio State put a runner on with one out, Indiana first baseman CaraMia Tsirigos caught a liner from Cammi Prantl then stepped on the bag to complete the double play and end the inning.
For the third consecutive frame, the Hoosiers added a run in the fifth while keeping the Buckeyes scoreless as senior Shannon Cawley made it a one-run ballgame at 4-3 on a score off a sacrifice fly by senior Brianna Meyer.
However, Ohio State would get back on the board in the sixth as Kirk led off the frame with a solo home run to left field. The Buckeyes then pushed their lead to 6-3 on a bases-loaded walk taken by Maddy McIntyre to plate Ashley Goodwin.
Indiana and Ohio State will face each again later this week as the teams open up play against each other in round one of the Big Ten Tournament as the Hoosiers have earned the No.11 seed and the Buckeyes the No. 6. The contest will be played at Buckeye Field on Thursday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network.
