GOLD RIVER, Calif.-- The compelling conclusion of the 2015 NCAA Rowing Championships took place on Sunday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. After rowing a combined 24,000 competitive meters over the full championship weekend, the Indiana Hoosiers finished as the 11th-ranked team in Division I rowing for the second consecutive season.
Indiana's II Varsity Eight crew was the first to take the water on Sunday in the 2V8 Petite Final. The Hoosiers were the second-fastest boat on the water for the first 1500 meters, but a late surge by their trailing competition resulted in a fifth-place finish in their final race. Their time of 6:37.64 was 12 seconds faster than their semifinal performance, and earned the 2V8 crew an 11th-place overall finish at the National Championships.
Next to the starting buoys was Indiana's I Varsity Eight crew, which reached the NCAA Petite Final race for the second consecutive season. The Hoosiers faced tough competition in this race, includng familiar Big Ten opponent Michigan and three perennial contenders from the Ivy League. Indiana's 1V8 crew amassed a valiant performance, charging past Princeton and Harvard in the final 1,000 meters for a fourth-place finish. Like their 2V8 teammates, the 1V8 crew posted a time 12 seconds faster than their semifinal effort, earning their season finish as the No. 10 crew in the nation.
Indiana's I Varsity Four crew raced together competitvely for the first time on Friday, and have increased their racing speed each time they've taken the water. Saturday's semifinal events concluded with an IU victory in the C/D Semifinal, giving them the top lane in the 1V4 C Final. The Hoosiers' four boat held the lead wire-to-wire for their second race win of the weekend, and a 13th-place finish in their respective group.
