BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced their regional coaching staff's of the year on June 2, and for the second straight season, head coach Steve Peterson and his staff claimed the award for their region.
Peterson, who just completed his 12th season at Indiana, is joined on his coaching staff by:
Sheila Rinozzi (assistant coach/2V8+)
Kate Sweeney (Novice coach/V4+)
Bonnie Chilibeck (volunteer assistant/Novice)
Stefan Evano (Director of Equipment and Operations).
Other programs that claimed region staff of the year include Brown (Region 1), Northeastern (Region 2), Texas (Region 3) and Washington State (Region 5). Each of the regional staff winners are now eligible to be named National Coach and Staff of the Year by the CRCA.
The Staff of the Year Award is intended to recognize a staff that fits one or more of the following criteria: Outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled team's potential and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
Coming off a 2014 season that was easily the best in program history - where the Hoosiers finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history - Peterson and his staff had to manage expectations coming into 2015. The Hoosiers returned everyone from the 1V8 boat and had depth in the 2V8 and 1V4 crews as well as a very strong novice program.
The 1V8 boat posted a 22-2 record during the spring season and entered the postseason ranked in the top 15 in the country. The Hoosiers matched the 2014 result with a fourth place showing at the 2015 Big Ten Championships. They earned another at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, where they placed 11th for the second straight year.
In addition to the regional coaching staff of the year, the Hoosiers also had a number of athletes earn all-region accolades. Senior Mera Dickensheets (first team), sophomore Alice Wright (first team), senior Karly Kikkert (second team) and junior Rebecca Brougher (second team) also earned all-region accolades from the CRCA.
Dickensheets earned First Team All-Big Ten honors for the second time in 2015 while Rebecca Brougher andAlice Wright were named to the Second Team All-Big Ten this year.
