BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association of America (CRCA) announced the 2015 Pocock All-American teams and for the second straight season, Indiana's Meradith Dickensheets was named to the first team. Sophomore Alice Wright was named to the second team, marking her first All-American honor.
"I am extremely excited for both Meradith and Alice earning these honors," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "They are both are great examples of what our team is about - hard work, dedication and commitment to the team. They are truly deserving of these honors."
Dickensheets, a native of Lafayette, Ind., was the first IU rower to receive first team All-American honors last year and now becomes the only one to be named to the first team on two occasions. She joins Laura Lazaridis(2005, 2006 - second team) as the only Hoosiers to be named two-time All-Americans. This season, Dickensheets received First Team All-Big Ten accolades as a member of the First Varsity 8 and helped guide the Hoosiers to their second straight NCAA Championship appearance, where they finished 11th as a team.
"I don't know what else to say about Mera," Peterson said of Dickensheets. "She came to the team as a novice four years ago and has just worked every day to get better and better and is finishing her career at IU as one of the best in collegiate women's rowing. She has been the foundation to the team's success and I know the team wouldn't have made the strides it did the past two years without her. When people ask me what makes Indiana rowing so special, it is people like Mera."
Wright, from Wellington, New Zealand, earns her first All-American honors after being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year last year and collecting Second Team All-Big Ten distinction this season. She was the stroke seat in the 1V8 each of the past two seasons, where the Hoosiers advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.
"Alice has brought so much to this team in her first two years as a Hoosier," Peterson said of the sophomore. "Although she came in as a very experienced recruit, the trait that makes her so special is that she has continued to get better. Many athletes might sit on their laurels after the freshman season Alice had and simply expect success to keep coming. But she came back this year with higher goals and worked even harder to push herself and her crew to greater achievements. It is exciting to see how much she has grown these first two seasons, and even more exciting to think about how much better she will be after two more."
