GOLD RIVER, Calif.-- The 2015 NCAA Championships at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in sunny Sacramento began on Friday morning with the preliminary heats across all divisions. At the day's end, both of IU's eight boats advanced to the A/B National Semifinals, and Indiana's four boat advanced to the C/D semifinals
The Indiana Hoosiers began the day with third-place finishes in their I Varsity Eight and II Varsity Eight boats, and a fourth-place finish in the Varsity Four boat.
Teams that finish in first or second in their respective heats automatically advance to Saturday's semifinals. Those finishing third, fourth, or fifth competed in a repechage, or second-chance race, on Friday afternoon in hopes of entering the semifinal races.
Indiana's first eight boat took part in the most intriguing heat on paper, which included four Big Ten grand finalists (Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin) and UCF. The Hoosiers cruised past Wisconsin at the 500-meter mark, and held on for a third-place finish with a time of 6:34.029.
With 2000 meters down and 2000 more to row on Friday, the Hoosiers had to muster all available mental and physical energy in hopes of acquiring the final spot in the Varsity Eight Semifinals. It was a tough race, even coming in as the top seed, but the Hoosiers earned the coveted second-place spot with a time of 6:28.262 to advance to the national semifinals.
The second eight boat shared similar fates with the first eight boat, taking a third-place finish in their first heat. They found themselves in fourth place after the opening breakaway, but managed to edge fourth-place Harvard halfway through the course for a 6:42.934 time.
Like their teammates in the first eight boat, the Hoosiers in the second eight boat needed to finish second or better to advance to the national semifinals. They were the fastest boat on the water for the first 1000 meters, and managed to keep pace for a second-place finish. IU's time of 6:40.155 was an improvement on their first run, and put them in the A/B Semifinal race on Saturday.
The Varsity Four boat advanced to the repechage round after finishing fourth in their preliminary race with a time of 7:35.797, edging Gonzaga University. The Hoosiers returned to the water on Friday afternoon in hopes of grabbing the final spot of the A/B semifinals, but fell five seconds short of second-place Notre Dame. The Varsity Four posted a time of 7:32.171 in their second race, and advanced to the C/D semifinals.
