1V8 continues winning ways with another win on Saturday
7th ANNUAL DALE ENGLAND CUP |
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday, the schedule for the second day of the 7th Annual Dale England Cup was adjusted to fit the races in before the rain hit. The move was successful, as each of the five scheduled races were completed with a slight chop on the water and a 6 mph headwind.
When the regatta was over, it was No. 12 Texas that had 63 points to take home the Dale England Cup, while No. 11 Indiana checked in with 57 points in second place. Notre Dame finished third with 42 points and Columbia was fourth with 18 points.
Just as they have all spring, the First Varsity 8 boat for the Hoosiers provided a strong performance, as they won their race against each of the other three schools in a time of 6:53.9, which was 5.3 seconds ahead of Texas and 13.7 seconds in front of Notre Dame.
The First Varsity 8 has a record of 22-2 in competitive races this spring, with the two losses coming to No. 1 Ohio State and No. 4 Virginia at the Clemson Invitational. The Hoosiers have wins over No. 7 Michigan, No. 12 Texas, No. 15 Radcliffe, NO. 16 UCLA and No. 19 Gonzaga.
In the Second Varsity 8 race, it would be Texas that came away with the win while Notre Dame finished second and Indiana was third (7:17.3) ahead of Columbia.
The 2V4 race saw Texas register the win in a time of 8:30.5 and Notre Dame in second place with their time of 8:40.4. The Indiana 2V4 boat came in third and the 3V4 boat from Indiana was fourth. Points towards the team score were not awarded in this race.
To wrap-up the day, a variety of Novice 8 and Varsity 8 crews took to the water looking for some experience. At the finish line, it was the Indiana Novice 8 that won the race with a time of 7:49.1, just 4.4 seconds ahead of the Notre Dame 3V8. In that same race, the 2N8 from Indiana finished third while the Notre Dame 4V8 was fourth.
The next regatta on the IU schedule is the Big Ten Championships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, which takes place May 16-17.
