GWANGJU, South Korea — Indiana All-American Lindsay Vrooman capped off a meet to remember, winning a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle Friday night at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea.
Vrooman earned her first major international gold medal with a winning time of 8:26.67 in the 800-meter freestyle. That is a personal best for Vrooman and currently ranks ninth in the world.
It was an outstanding meet for Vrooman as she also won silver medals in the 400-meter freestyle (4:07.28) and 1,500-meter freestyle (16:13.85). All three medal times were personal bests for the seven-time Big Ten Champion who competed for the Hoosiers from 2011-14.
Indiana freshman Lilly King added to her medal total on the final day of competition, earning a bronze with Team USA in the 400-meter medley relay. Swimming the breaststroke leg, King teamed up with Elizabeth Pelton, Felicia Lee and Shannon Vreeland for a time of 4:00.75. Earlier in the meet King won silver in the 100-meter breaststroke.
King also swam the 50-meter freestyle final on Friday, finishing eighth (32.15).
In addition to Vrooman and King, the Hoosiers were represented at the World University Games by junior Anze Tavcar (Slovenia) and recent graduate Justine Ress (France). IU head coach Ray Looze served as head coach for the USA Swimming contingent.
The five medals won by Hoosiers was part of a record-setting performance for USA Swimming at the World University Games. The U.S. brings home 33 medals (15 gold, 10 silver, 8 bronze), topping the old mark of 27 set in 2007.
