TORONTO — Indiana University junior Gia Dalesandro finished sixth in the championship final of the 100-meter butterfly Thursday night at the 2015 Pan Am Games at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House in Toronto.
Dalesandro, the two-time Big Ten Champion in the 200-yard butterfly, clocked a time of 59.24, good for sixth place. USA teammate Kelsi Worrell won gold (57.78), with Canadians Noemie Thomas (58.00) and Katerine Savard (58.05) claiming silver and bronze.
In the morning prelim session Dalesandro put up a time of 59.83 to finish second in her heat and earn a top-eight spot.
Dalesandro is part of a busy summer of international swimming and diving for the Hoosiers. Indiana University swimmers took home five medals at the World University Games last week with Lindsay Vrooman (gold, 2 silver) and Lilly King (silver, bronze). IU head swimming coach Ray Looze served as head coach of a Team USA squad that brought home a record 34 medals.
Beginning next week the Hoosiers will be well-represented at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. The Hoosiers have sent six divers (Michael Hixon, Jessica Parratto, James Connor, Darian Schmidt, Amy Cozad and Emad Abdelatif) to the World Championships, while IU will be represented on the swimming side by Cody Miller (USA), Kennedy Goss (Canada) and Ali Khalafalla (Egypt). In addition, IU head diving coach Drew Johansen is serving as head coach for the Team USA contingent.
The FINA World Championships run July 24-August 9.
