KAZAN, Russia — Indiana University junior diver Michael Hixon earned a bronze medal in the men's 1-meter springboard competition Monday at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
It is Hixon's first major international medal, and the first medal for a USA man on the 1-meter springboard since Troy Dumais in 1998.
Hixon was in fifth place heading into the final round and it was a score of 83.30 on his inward 2 ½ pike that vaulted him into the medal standings with a final score of 428.30. China's Siyi Xie took gold (485.50), with Ukraine's Illya Kvasha winning silver (449.05).
Hixon sat in 10th place after the first two of six rounds before slowly making his way up the leaderboard. A score of 76.50 on his forward 3 ½ somersault tuck moved him into ninth place in the third round, and he stayed there after 72 points on his forward 2 1/2 somersaults with 1 twist pike.
In round five his reverse 2 1/2 somersaults tuck earned 70.50 points and moved him up for spots to fifth place.
Hixon is the reigning Big Ten Champion on the 1-meter springboard and finished fifth in the event at the 2015 NCAA Championships. He was the 2014 NCAA Champion on the 1-meter.
Competition is not yet done for Hixon at the World Championships, as he will compete Thursday in the men's 3-meter springboard prelims. Fellow Hoosiers Darian Schmidt (USA), James Connor (Australia) and Emad Abdelatif (Egypt) will join him in the 3-meter prelims.
In the women's synchronized platform final, Indiana sophomore Jessica Parratto and former IU All-American Amy Cozad teamed up to give the United States a ninth place finish, posting a score of 295.86.
Both Cozad and Parratto will compete individually in the platform prelims on Wednesday.
