KAZAN, Russia — Former Indiana University All-American diver Amy Cozad finished sixth in the women's platform competition Thursday at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
It is the best finish by an American woman on the platform at a World Championships since Laura Wilkinson placed fourth in 2007.
"It was so awesome to be a part of that final," Cozad told USA Diving. "The thing I'm most proud of is I didn't hold back. I went after everything as hard as I could and just trusted my training."
Cozad finished with a sore of 361.95, tallying 70 or more points on four of her five dives. North Korea's Kuk Hyang Kim took home the gold medal, followed by China's Qian Ren for silver and Malaysia's Pandelela Rinong Anak Pamg for bronze.
In the men's 3-meter springboard competition, sophomore James Connor booked his spot in Friday's final after posting a score of 457.10 in the semifinal round, good for 11th place. That finish also earns Australia a spot at the 2016 Olympics. Connor used a monster score on his sixth and final dive to earn a spot in the final, scoring 89.25 points on his reverse 3 ½ somersault tuck to jump from 13th to 11th in the standings.
IU junior Michael Hixon finished 13th in the semifinal round, missing a spot in the final by one place as his final score of 441.10 was 9.80 points out of the 12th and final qualifying spot.
Hixon's best dives of the day were his forward 2 ½ somersault with two twists, and his inward 3 ½ somersault tuck, both of which went for scores of 86.70.
In the morning prelims session, Connor was the highest Hoosiers finisher in 10th place, tallying a score of 431.85, including a score of 84.00 on his final dive of the round. Hixon was in 14th place with his tally of 421.70.
Former IU Big Ten Champion and All-American Darian Schmidt finished 31st in prelims with a score of 380.95. Schmidt was solid over his first three dives, sitting in ninth place with a score of 217.30. But a miss on his fourth and sixth dives dropped him out of an advancing spot. Another former Hoosier Emad Abdelatif finished 52nd while diving for his native Egypt, posting a score of 313.50.
Also taking place right now is the USA Swimming Speedo Junior National Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Incoming Indiana freshman Ian Finnerty was the top qualifier for the championship final after posting a time of 1:02.66 in prelims. Fellow IU newcomer Miranda Tucker was the top qualifier on the women's side in the same event. Tucker's prelims time of 1:08.83 ranks fourth on the all-time IU list.
