BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University rowing head coach Steve Peterson announced that Amanda Perry and Kim Chavers have joined the program as assistant coaches.
"I am extremely excited to have Amanda and Kim joining the staff here at Indiana," Peterson said. "Both bring a wealth of outstanding experience to the staff. Amanda's success as a part of several National Championship coaching staffs and previous Big Ten experience will be invaluable to the varsity athletes, while all of Kim's experience as a coach at the junior level will translate well to introducing and teaching the novice rowers new to the team.
"The goals we have for the team this year are high and I am very thrilled to have them both Amanda and Kim here to help us build upon the tremendous success we have had the past few years."
Perry, a former All-American at Ohio State, joins the Hoosiers after spending the last season at Cornell and has nearly a decade of coaching experience. Highlighting her experience was being on staff at Brown and Virginia when those programs won national championships in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
A graduate of Ohio State University, she helped the Buckeyes as a volunteer coach for two seasons after graduation as she completed tryouts for the national team. From there, she moved on to Brown and helped them to the national championship in 2008 and made a return trip to the finals in 2010.
"I am very excited to be a part of the Indiana program and coaching alongside Coach Peterson and Coach Chavers," Perry said. "We already have a strong working relationship and the entire staff is as good as it gets. And after competing in the Big Ten during my collegiate career, I feel right at home and look forward to helping the program to continued success."
Chavers comes to IU after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Stetson University. Prior to that, she was the boy's varsity head coach at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. The teams there qualified for the national championships both seasons Chavers was there and finished first or second in their conference both seasons as well.
She also has experience as a novice girls coach at Boston Latin School in Massachusetts and was an instructor at the Capital Rowing Club in Washington, D.C. She rowed on the collegiate level at Marietta College in Ohio, where she graduated in 2008. She would go on to earn her doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northeastern in 2012.
"I am thrilled to be part of such a talented coaching staff," Chavers said. "And I am excited to get started on what promises to be a great upcoming season. Having worked extensively with young, student-athletes, I am looking forward to building a successful Novice team here at Indiana and helping them grow and enhance their college experience."
Peterson and the Hoosiers are coming off back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championships, the first two appearances in program history and finished 10th in both appearances. Indiana has also placed fourth in the last two Big Ten Championships, setting new program bests in that event as well.
