Latino shines on offense with three goals and two assists
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers took part in their first home action on Friday afternoon, the Cream & Crimson Scrimmage. At the end of 70 minutes of regulation play, the Crimson team emerged victorious with a score of 5-2.
Maddie Latino put on an electric offensive performance in the intrasquad exhibition. Latino netted a hat trick in and added two assists to a prolific stat line. Indiana senior Rachel Stauffer provided two first half goals for the Crimson team.
The squads were split into starters and rotation players for the first half, with the starting eleven in the crimson jerseys. The Cream team, composed of five rotation players and three members of the coaching staff, played down three players for the first half. Nonetheless, the coaches were first to get things going on offense. Assistant coach Ayla Halus scored the first goal of the game to give Cream an early 1-0 lead. Stauffer returned fire on the other end with an equalizing goal, a shot into an open net courtesy of a precision pass by Latino.
Latino proceeded to slot an unassisted goal for the first Crimson lead of the game, jumping on a parry attempt by Katie Johnson. Latino found Stauffer yet again for Crimson's third goal of the game, also into an open net. Latino followed with two more goals before the end of the half. Senior Karen Lorite and sophomore Taylor Pearson were credited with the assists on Latino's second and third goal, respectively. At half time, Crimson led 5-1 over Cream.
The coaches rotated the teams for a more balanced ten-on-nine format in the second half. Junior captain Kate Barber grabbed Cream's second goal in transition midway through the second half, but tight defense from Crimson prevented any further attempts from crossing the goal line. The Crimson side held on for the 5-2 win at the end of 70 minutes.
Following the regulation period, the teams agreed to play a 15-minute overtime period in the golden goal format, where the first goal won the overtime period. Freshman Claire Woods and the Cream team made short work of overtime. Stauffer broke down the far wing on a counterattack and slid the ball into the middle for Woods, who cut past Crimson keeper Noëlle Rother for the golden goal.
The teams concluded the exhibition with a five-on-five penalty shootout, which the Crimson team took by a narrow 2-1 win. Morgan Dye was first on the board to give the Cream an early lead, but Crimson attackers Pearson and Latino scored the decisive goals in the penalty shootout victory.
Up next, the Hoosiers travel to Louisville for an exhibition against the Iowa Hawkeyes, one of Indiana's Big Ten Conference foes. The exhibition will be the last of Indiana's preseason, and will take place on Sunday, August 23 at 11:30 am ET.
