Indiana faced the Hawkeyes in their final exhibition before Friday's season-opener
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers played their final scrimmage of the 2015 preseason on Sunday against Iowa at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. Indiana scored five goals in the competition, taking wins over the Hawkeyes in the overtime and penalty shootout. In addition, the Hoosiers gained an early preview of one of their future Big Ten Conference opponents.
The scrimmage began with a standard regulation period, like their exhibition against the Redhawks of Miami University. Iowa edged the Hoosiers in regulation by a narrow margin, 2-1. Maddie Latino scored Indiana's goal in regulation, her third goal in the two exhibition games. Latino's position shift from the midfield in the 2014 season to center forward this season has resulted in a high volume of goals during Indiana's exhibition play.
Following regulation, the Hoosiers and Hawkeyes engaged in a seven-on-seven overtime period, where a golden goal determined the winner. Indiana found the overtime-winning score in senior Karen Lorite, who was Indiana's right defender last season. Coach Amanda Janney's decision to move Lorite to the forward has paid dividends in the early going this season. "She scored some great goals for us in the spring," Janney said. "This position change is going to be a big difference-maker for the upcoming fall season."
As they have in their previous exhibitions, the Hoosiers finished the day with a penalty shootout. Indiana triumphed in the final event of the afternoon with a 3-2 shootout win. Scoring for the Hoosiers in the shootout were Maddie Latino, Rachel Stauffer, and Elle Hempt.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, August 28, where they will play a two-game weekend slate at the University of Louisville. Indiana opens their regular season on Friday against Missouri State at 4:00 pm ET. On Sunday, August 30, the Hoosiers will take on the hosts, the Louisville Cardinals, at 1:30 pm ET.
