BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite a late offensive attack, the Indiana Women's Soccer team dropped the season opener to No. 13 Virginia Tech on Friday at Armstrong Stadium, 2-1.
Virginia Tech got off to a fast start as a trio of corner kicks in the first three minutes of action provided opportunities, but the Hokies came up empty.
Junior Murielle Tiernan, who netted both Virginia Tech goals, connected on the game's first score on a header from Heather Timothy in the 11th minute of action.
Seven minutes later, Tiernan pushed the lead to 2-0 after Morgan Conklin set up the score on a high cross from midfield to the center of the box as Tiernan laid it in.
The Hokies continued the aggressive play as they recorded eight first-period shots, compared to Indiana's three.
Indiana Sophomore Kayla Smith, who was recently named to the Big Ten's Players to Watch List, gave Indiana two good looks in the first period and finished the game with a team-high six shots, half of which were on target.
The Hoosiers turned the tables in the second period, outshooting the Hokies, 7-3.
"I'm happy with the second half," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "If we can build off of that, I think we're going to be alright."
After a pair of shots by Smith, including an on-goal look, freshman Abby Allen provided Indiana's biggest threat of the game up to that point as Hokie goalkeeper Kaylyn Smith just barely got her hands on the ball for the save on a shot to the far post in the 73rd minute after Allen out-raced the Hokie defenders on a loose ball.
Bujouves would strike just six minutes later as she took a pass from freshman Caroline Dreher and found space at top of the goal from 20 yards out to put the Hoosiers on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1.
"I think it gave us a bit of energy," said Bujouves. "You could tell everyone was amped up."
Indiana kept up the attack as Smith and Bujouves both put up shots on goal in the two minutes following the score.
However, Virginia Tech's Smith kept the Hoosiers out of the net to preserve the Hokie victory.
Indiana returns to action on Sunday as they host SIU-Edwardsville in the finale to the 2015 Hoosier Classic.
"I think our team is very resilient and that's going to be a great quality for us throughout the season," said Bujouves. "We can bounce back from this and come out and fight on Sunday."
