The Indiana Women's Soccer team opens the 2015 season this weekend with the Hoosier Classic at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers will face No. 13 Virginia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m. before playing SIUE on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
WHAT'S IN STORE FOR 2015
The Hoosiers will open the 2015 season with a pair of 2014 NCAA Tournament participants in Virginia Tech and SIUE. In addition, Indiana will face Missouri next weekend in West Lafayette, marking three straight contests against 2014 Tournament participants to start the year. In total, seven of the Hoosiers' 2015 opponents played in last season's tournament. Additionally, five Indiana opponents received a spot in the NSCAA Preseason rankings, including Virginia Tech at No. 13.
HOSTING THE HOKIES
Since the program started in 1993, Indiana is 14-6-2 all-time in regular season openers
Friday's matchup marks just the second time Indiana and Virginia Tech have faced each other. The Hoosiers defeated the Hokies, 2-1, in 1994 in the Buckeye/adidas Classic.
Virginia Tech finished the 2014 season with a 16-6 mark and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
SCOUTING SIUE
Indiana and SIU-Edwardsville are also playing for just the second time in program history this weekend. The Hoosiers picked up a 4-0 shutout victory in Edwardsville in 1993.
The Cougars went 13-6-2 last season and tied with Kentucky in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
NEW FACES
The Hoosiers welcome eight new players to the roster in 2015, including seven freshmen in Abby Allen, Bristal Hadley-Mautino, Hanna Johnson, Maya Piper, Caroline Dreher, Cassidy Blacha and Justine Lynn. In addition, senior Emily Basten joins the Hoosiers after transferring from Central Michigan.
TOP RETURNERS
With the 8 newcomers, there are 16 returners from the 2014 squad. Jessie Bujouves, who led the Hoosiers in goals last season with eight, will return to help pace the offense for her senior campaign. Sophomore Kayla Smith, who ranked second behind Bujouves with nine points last season is also on track for another productive year.
On the defensive end, GK Sarah Stone is likely to get the start after posting five shutouts in 2014. Also leading the defensive unit will be Marissa Borschke who, along with Stone and Smith, was named a Big Ten Player to Watch.
RECAPPING 2014
The Hoosiers posted a 7-11-1 mark last season. The defense shined as Indiana surrendered just 25 goals, the fewest since allowing 22 during the 2009 campaign. Indiana closed out the year with two consecutive shutouts – a 1-0 victory at Purdue and a 2-0 win against Michigan State. In addition, the shutout at Purdue marked the third straight victory against the Boilermakers.
