The Hoosier attack scored all five of their goals in the first 30 minutes of play
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers opened their 2015 season on Friday afternoon against Missouri State. Indiana's fast-paced attack yielded five unanswered scores in the first half, resulting in a 5-1 win for the Hoosiers.
Karen Lorite led the Hoosiers with two goals in the first 25 minutes of play. Kate Barber, Maddie Latino, and Rachel Stauffer contributed to Indiana's winning score line with one goal apiece.
Lorite returned for her senior season as one of Indiana's top defenders, leading the Hoosiers in defensive saves during the 2014 season. Indiana head coach Amanda Janney moved Lorite to the attacking third for the 2015 season. In her first game as a forward this season, Lorite netted two scores.
"It feels great," Lorite said regarding the team's first win of the season. "I'm really excited about the goals, but I think they were a result of our team play."
Although Lorite's transition bolstered the Hoosier attack, she believes that her scores were circumstantial when considering the overall increase in offensive fluidity. "They don't feel like my goals," Lorite continued. "Everyone contributed to the scores, and everyone had great chances in the game."
This win was equally significant in that it was Janney's first win as Indiana's head coach. Janney said after the game that the win was earned, and the way they won was a true testament to the Hoosiers' work ethic this offseason.
"It makes me really proud of how hard our players worked for us," Janney said. "We've talked about having an attacking mentality and scoring first, and we got a goal in three minutes. To see all that hard work pay off like that means a lot to me early in the season."
Indiana's Kate Barber was first on the scoreboard this season for the Hoosiers, an unassisted shot that gave Indiana a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the game. At fifteen minutes, Barber found Maddie Latino for a 2-0 lead.
Latino paid it forward three minutes later, assisting on Lorite's first goal of the game. Lorite grabbed her second goal off of a corner for a 4-0 lead, Indiana's third goal in a six-minute span.
Senior Rachel Stauffer scored an unassisted goal in the 29th minute of play, Indiana's fifth and final goal of the game. Indiana played strong defense in the both halves, led by freshman goalkeeper Noëlle Rother. In her Indiana debut in the cage, Rother made five saves and conceded just one goal.
Overall, the Hoosiers amassed a solid opening performance in their high-flying win over Missouri State, one that showed Indiana the yields of their hard work in the offseason and preseason training. Lorite, for one, was impressed with the result. "I'm really proud of our team performance today," the senior forward said. "The win felt great."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, August 30 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Indiana will face one of their toughest non-conference opponents of the season, the No. 12 Louisville Cardinals, in Trager Stadium on the University of Louisville campus. Live statistics will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
