MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – It wasn't exactly how the Indiana volleyball team envisioned their opening weekend, but three matches and 15 sets later, the Hoosiers came out with a 2-1 record after a 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-13) win at Middle Tennessee State to close out the Blue Raider Bash on Saturday at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Senior Amelia Anderson completed a productive weekend with 19 kills, bringing her season total to 67 (4.47/set). Anderson and senior Courtney Harnish, who averaged 4.0 digs/set and tallied 20 digs against the Blue Raiders, were named to the Blue Raider Bash All-Tournament Team.
Junior Allison Hammond came through for the Hoosiers (2-1) with 16 kills and hit at a .382 percentage for the match. Junior setter Makayla Lundin had a career-high 51 assists and senior middle blocker Chante George registered eight block assists.
After falling 26-24 in set three, the Hoosiers were on a mission to force another five set match. A block by George and Lundin and a kill by George put IU up 9-4 in the fourth set.
The Hoosiers tallied 14 kills and hit .462 in the fourth set, while holding the Blue Raiders to a -0.32 clip with eight kills and nine errors, including three Indiana blocks. The Hoosiers won the fourth set 25-16 to take the match to a decisive fifth set.
In set five the Hoosiers used a balanced attack with kills from five different players with junior Taylor Lebo connecting on a perfect three kills on three attempts. Harnish had seven digs to anchor the defense to hold MTSU to a .167 hitting percentage.
A kill from freshman Elizabeth Asdell opened up a 9-5 lead and back-to-back kills from George and Hammond extended that advantage to 12-7.
Middle Tennessee State gained momentum with 7-1 run to cut the lead to 14-13 but the Hoosiers put them away as Lundin served it up to Anderson, who slammed down the kill to win the match for Indiana.
