Hoosiers Top Lamar in Four Sets

Senior Amelia Anderson passes 800 career kills.
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – The Indiana volleyball team started the Delta Zeta Classic with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11) win over Lamar on Friday at Strahan Coliseum.
Senior Amelia Anderson led the Hoosiers with 17 kills and surpassed 800 career kills. Anderson, who hit at a .433 hitting percentage now has 807 for her career.
Lamar came out firing in the first set as they recorded 10 kills with only two errors (.308 percentage). The Hoosiers conversely had 15 kills, but nine errors, including five service errors. Lamar would go on to win set 1, 25-21.
In set two, the Hoosiers and Cardinals went back and fourth with six ties and three lead changes. Indiana was able to put up a more consistent block on Lamar and lowered the Cardinals hitting percentage to .167 in the second set. The Hoosiers turned up the service game as well with five aces, including one by senior Courtney Harnish, who had a career-high four in the match.
Sophomore Jessica Leish saw her first action of the season and came in at a pivotal time with Indiana trailing 17-13. Leish connected on two aces to help the Hoosiers go on a 7-1 run to build a 20-18 lead.
The Hoosiers (3-1) won set two, 25-21 and were determined to bring that momentum after the break. Set three was much of the same through the first half with nine ties and three lead changes and the teams tied 13-13. Senior Chante George ignited a 9-1 run with a powerful kill to give the Hoosiers a 22-14 lead and carried IU to a 25-18 win in set three.
Indiana put the match away in the fourth set with a 25-11 win against the Cardinals. Junior Taylor Lebo registered 14 digs for the match and junior Megan Tallman tallied 22 assists and nine digs. Senior Awele Nwaeze added six block for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers picked up the defense with 10 team blocks for the match and after Lamar hit .308 in the opening set, that percentage for the match fell to 0.91.
