Hoosiers Capture Indiana Invitational Title

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It took a victory in their fifth five set match of the season, but the Indiana volleyball team prevailed 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12, 11-11) over Northern Arizona to win the Indiana Invitational Saturday night at University Gym.
For the Hoosiers (7-2) it was their fourth straight victory and also marked the ninth straight season in which they have won one or more preseason tournaments.
The Indiana offense had a productive night, led by Senior Amelia Anderson with 26 kills and a .434 hitting percentage. Senior Awele Nwaeze hit .519 with 15 kills and junior Taylor Lebo added eight kills with a .533 hitting efficiency. Junior setter Megan Tallman quarterbacked the offense with a career-high 60 assists.
After falling behind 2-1 after three sets, the Hoosiers knew they had to raise their level of play in the fourth set. Anderson put down a kill to get the Hoosiers out to a 10-5 lead, which ignited an 8-0 run to burst open the set to 18-5. Indiana closed out the set on an Allison Hammond kill for a 25-12 set victory.
With the match tied 2-2, the Hoosiers went into their fifth five set match of the season. Anderson and Hammond combined for seven of the Hoosiers nine kills in the final set, but Indiana found themselves down 5-2 early in the fifth set.
Three straight kills and two Northern Arizona attack error gave the Hoosiers control of the set at 10-8. A Hammond kill brought the Hoosiers to set and match point and freshman Elizabeth Asdell and junior Jazzmine McDonald combined for a block to give the Hoosiers the win.
For the Hoosiers playing in five set matches has happened often this season and they have played well, with a 4-1 record in five set matches.
Anderson was named the tournament MVP and senior Courtney Harnish and Nwaeze were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Up next Indiana travels to Greeley, Colo., Sept. 18-19 for the Northern Colorado Classic.
