OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – A pair of upperclassmen took the reigns and led the Hoosiers in the first round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Senior Max Kollin and junior Keegan Vea both played well to finish their round at 2-over par 72 and tie for 27th.
There was one group that did not finish the first round on Friday due to a thunderstorm in the area. That group will return to the course at 9:00 a.m. ET to finish their round. Then round two will get underway at 10:00 a.m. ET.
As a team, with one score yet to be counted, the Hoosiers sit in 14th place out of 14 teams at 16-over par, four shots ahead of Northwestern in 15th place. Indiana also trails Arkansas by one shot and Alabama by three strokes. Out of the 15 teams in the field this week, eight are ranked inside the Top 25 of the GolfStat rankings.
Vea began his round with back-to-back birdies and followed that with a pair of bogeys on 14 and 15 to go out in 34. Then on his second nine holes, he posted three bogeys and one birdie to finish with a score of 72.
Kollin was 2-over after his first five holes after three bogeys and one birdie, but then steadied the ship and posted par on his next eight holes. After a bogey on the 5th hole, he birdied his final hole of the day to match Vea's round of 2-over par 72.
The next best score on the day for IU was sophomore Brendon Doyle, who was even after his first nine holes. But a double bogey on the par 5 first hole followed by bogeys on 5, 7 and 8 resulted in his score of 5-over par 75.
Freshman Jake Brown, playing in his second college tournament, was part of the final group that did not finish their first round. He was on his 18th hole of the day – the ninth hole on the course – and is 7-over par.
The fifth player competing towards the team score is junior Andrew Havill, who ran into a couple of holes that inflated his score. He registered a triple bogey on his third hole and then a double bogey on his 14th hole and finished with a score of 78 (+8).
Competing as an individual, sophomore Christian Fairbanks opened with a birdie and also birdied his fourth hole to get back to even after a double bogey on hole No. 3. He bogeyed three of the last four holes on the front side and then came in 2-over on the back nine for a total score of 75 (+3).
