BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team used a complete-team effort to earn a 3-0 victory over Evansville on Wednesday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With the win, Indiana improves to 4-3-1 on the season overall, while the Purple Aces fall to 2-4-0 on the year.
Senior Femi Hollinger-Janzen continued his hot streak, scoring a pair of goals in the victory. Sophomore Grant Lillard recorded his second goal of the season for the Hoosiers, while goalkeeper Colin Webb notched his third shutout of the season and the 13th of his career.
Tanner Thompson had a pair of assists in the victory to push his team-leading total to five, while Lillard and Billy McConnell also had assists for the Hoosiers.
"This was a test," IU head coach Todd Yeagley said after the match. "This is a game that says a lot about our team. Teams can go south quickly if they don't respond in a positive way, and the energy and positivity on this team is fantastic. That spirit came through tonight in the way they supported one another and how they went about their work."
With his pair of goals, Hollinger-Janzen has scored in each of the last three matches for the Hoosiers, totaling four goals during that stretch. For the season, Hollinger-Janzen leads the team and is tied for first in the Big Ten with five goals scored.
"After Sunday we had to pick up the group as a whole," Hollinger-Janzen remarked. "We had to get a positive mindset going in to this game and we did a great job. The energy before this game was phenomenal."
In the 7th minute, the Hoosiers earned the team's sixth penalty kick of the year after Evansville was called for a hand ball in the 18-yard box on a shot from Indiana's Cory Thomas. Hollinger-Janzen stepped to the spot and calmly delivered for IU, giving the Hoosiers an early, 1-0 advantage.
Late in the first half, Indiana struck again in he 40th minute to push the lead to 2-0 before the break. On the attack, Thompson had a great throw in for IU, finding Lillard at the near post. The sophomore flicked the ball to the far post for Hollinger-Janzen, who buried a header across the face of goal from four-yards out to notch his second goal of the match.
As controlling as Indiana was in the first half, the team was more dominant in the second. Looking for a third goal, the Hoosiers were on the attack in the 62nd minute after an Evansville foul.
Thompson played the free kick quickly down the right side, finding McConnell in space. The junior played a great cross to Lillard, who smashed a header near post for the goal, giving the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead.
Not to be overshadowed, the Indiana defense was tremendous in the win over the Purple Aces. The Hoosiers allowed Evansville just seven shots for the match, with UE getting no shots on goal.
"We went back to focusing on the little things," Lillard said of the Hoosier defense. "We had better communication. Things we were doing well at the beginning of the year we strayed away from, but I think we put it back together tonight and I think we will continue to do that the rest of the year."
For the match, Indiana had a 17-7 shot advantage over the Purple Aces, with IU getting seven shots on-goal.
Indiana will hit the road this weekend and travel north to Bridgeview, Ill. to face Big Ten rival Northwestern on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and will be held at Toyota Park – the home of the MLS' Chicago Fire.
