Seven Singles Wins Paces IU on Day One of Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The first day of the 2015 Hoosier Classic hosted by the IU women's tennis team got underway on Friday at the IU Tennis Courts. The Hoosiers picked up seven wins in singles action and six victories in doubles.
On the singles side, junior Paula Gutierrez earned a three set win in her first singles match while another junior, Kim Schmider also earned a three set victory on Friday.
A pair of sophomores – Sarah Baron and Stephanie Smith – also advanced as winners in their first match with two set wins.
There were a trio of freshmen that earned their first collegiate wins while wearing the Cream and Crimson. Madison Appel posted a two set win with scores of 6-4 and 7-5 while Natalie Whalen cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win in her match. Danielle Wolf, from Cincinnati, Ohio, also won handily, logging a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
On the doubles side, Smith and Wolf teamed up for a pair of wins by a 6-1 margin. Schmider and Whalen also won twice in doubles action to remain in the winners bracket of the draw.
Gutierrez and Baron earned a 6-1 win in their first doubles match but then lost their second match of the day.
The fourth IU doubles team of Sarah McLean and Madison Appel won a narrow 6-4 decision to start the day but would fall in their second match.
The tournament will continue on the outdoor courts at the IU Tennis Center on Saturday morning.
