EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Hoosiers opened Big Ten play with a 3-0 setback (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) on the road at Michigan State on Friday at Jenison Field House.
The loss snapped the Hoosiers seven match winning streak, their longest win streak since the 2010 season.
Senior middle blocker Awele Nwaeze led the Hoosiers (10-3, 0-1) with eight kills while hitting at a .400 hitting percentage for the match.
Junior setter Megan Tallman tallied 31 assists and senior Kyndall Merritt added eight digs for Indiana.
The first half of set one went back and fourth with Michigan State holding a slight 8-7 edge after committing a service error. The Spartans went on an 9-3 run from there to gain a 17-10 edge in the set. Helped by the service game and four aces the Hoosiers went on a run of their own and tied the set, 20-20. Three Michigan State kills and an Indiana attack error put MSU up 24-20 and they won the set 25-21.
Set two was played extremely close with nine ties and two lead changes, including a 13-13 tie. Michigan State again put together a small spurt to take a 16-13 advantage. A Taylor Lebo ace and Michigan State attack error brought Indiana to within 20-19, but multiple Indiana errors have Michigan State match point at 24-19 and they put the set away, 25-20.
In set three, Amelia Anderson and Awele Nwaeze hit over .600 but the Hoosiers made seven attack errors compared to just one from Michigan State. The Spartans won set three 25-20 to take the match.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Ann Arbor to take on No. 22 Michigan on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
