BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana junior Nate Jackson received weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference after a thrilling win last Sunday over Penn State's Bo Nickal, the top-ranked wrestler at 174 lbs. Jackson is the second Hoosier to win the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week award, joining sophomore Luke Blanton (12/15).
In the Hoosiers' dual loss against top-ranked Penn State last Sunday, fans on both sides had their eye on the matchup at 174 lbs. between #11 Jackson and #1 Nickal. The Penn State freshman scored first with a takedown late in the first period, but Jackson countered with a reversal and a four-point nearfall for a 6-2 lead. Jackson displayed his outstanding defensive skills for the final four minutes of the bout, holding on for a 7-6 decision win.
The win gives Jackson his fourth career win over a ranked opponent, his first against the #1 grappler in his weight class.
Jackson vaulted in the latest national rankings after his big win. The redshirt junior jumped from No. 11 to No. 6 in the latest InterMat rankings. Nickal, after the first defeat of his collegiate career, remains at No. 1.
